Types of Contribution
Four categories of scholarly contributions to the conference
were invited;
- Invited Keynote Articles on key areas of heterocyclic chemistry.
- Contributed Articles. There is no restriction on length. Authors
were encouraged to make full use of 'multimedia' techniques in their article,
and in particular the use of "hyperlinks" within articles that
add value to the discussion. More than one article could be submitted if
on significantly different topics.
Each article had an indicated e-mail address for all
correspondence in the form of a hyperlink of the
type <A HREF="mailto:name@address.country">author</A>.
- Conference Posters. Posters were
refereed by the conference scientific
advisory panel.
- Electronic Mail discussion of the scholarly contributions
was invited, and is included in the conference proceedings and the CD-ROM.
At the end of the discussion period on 22 July 1996,
ECHET96 authors choose whether to place their contribution in one of two
categories.
- Articles will remain accessible on the web for at least two years
after the close of the discussion period, the work will
also be published as conference proceedings in a CD-ROM
and will be
liable to abstraction by
Chemical Abstracts.
Authors agreed to have their contribution included in the conference proceedings,
and copyright for any contribution in the above categories
resides with the conference organisers,
to facilitate subsequent abstracting and distribution of the
conference proceedings in CD-ROM form.
The authors of any article so included will collectively be entitled to one
FREE copy of this CD-ROM, and a concessionary rate on further copies.
- In the second
category, the ECHET96 contribution were removed at the end of the
conference and will neither be abstracted by CAS nor published on the CD-ROM
(except for title and abstract).
The reason for offering the above choice concerns the desire
some authors may have to publish some or all of their work subsequently in
conventional journal form. Some journals (J.Am.Chem.Soc. and Angew.Chem.) have an
explicit policy of refusing to accept work that has appeared on
"electronic bulletin boards", such as this conference. The editor of
J.Am.Chem.Soc. has stated, however, that he will consider acceptance
of papers that contain new (and of course novel) findings beyond those
reported at ECHET96. That is, insofar as J.Am.Chem.Soc. is considered,
a paper appearing in the present conference can be regarded as if it were a
Communication published in J.Am.Chem.Soc. or another journal. The
current J.Am.Chem.Soc. rules then apply to submitting work as a full
paper to the journal.
Other journals (e.g. J. Org. Chem.) will accept an ECHET96
contribution for review so long as there is no permanent record and no
copyright distribution. Such papers should likewise avoid presenting
detailed experimental information. In other words, this class of journals
will accept work that appears at ECHET96 in a form that is as close as
possible to a face-to-face conference lecture.
The second author category mentioned above should accommodate both
types of journal policies. Any author who plans to submit ECHET96
contributions for subequent printed
journal publication is advised to check the "Notice to
Authors" for the specific journal in question.
Chemical
Abstracts have indicated the following regarding the
conference articles on the conference
CD-ROM; "We will regard them as genuine scholarly works to be
abstracted in the accepted way (assuming that they report new
chemical information and are original publications)" As such we would
not expect such contributions to be re-published elsewhere in the
substantive form as submitted to this conference.
Chemical Abstracts have stated the following regarding conference posters
included on the CD-ROM; "Whether
we abstract and index the posters will be based on our review of
their individual contents. We have treated such documents as brief
scientific communications suitable for abstracting as long as there
is a clear presentation of a novel finding supported by some
discussion and experimental data or scientific analysis, including
equations, tables, graphs, or structural diagrams, and references".
Those articles that authors have not withdrawn from ECHET96 on-line will remain
available for at least two years until July 22, 1998.
The conference proceedings are published in this CD-ROM form for permanent archival
in libraries.
Copying ECHET96 data or
abstracting papers by commercial ventures at any time is unauthorized and a
violation of copyright.
